Donald Lee Hill, Sr., 72, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2021 at home after an extended illness.
Donald was born April 7, 1949 in Chicago, IL to the late Larry Hill, Sr. and Naomi M. (Lockhart) Hill-Brown. On July 26, 2014 he married Maggie L. Cooks in Elkhart.
Donald is survived by his loving wife Maggie of South Bend. Three sons: Darrell Hill of Elkhart, Donald Lee Hill, Jr. of Niles, MI and Mikel J. (Shaunte) Tiggs of Granger. Two daughters: Walida (Nick) Schmanski of South Bend and Nicole R. Cunningham of Elkhart. Grandchildren; Ariana Manville, Donovan Hill, Aaron D. Cunningham, Sierra N. Bates and Saraiya Welch. Also surviving is a brother, Terence M. (Sharon) Hill of Elkhart and sisters, Yolanda K. Willis of Elkhart, Sharon (Joe) Stokes of Elkhart and Marlette Hill of Elkhart along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Larry Hill, Jr. and Alfred C. Hill and sister, Linda T. Army. He is also preceded in death by two former spouses, Marguerite J. Hill and Arlene Hill.
Donald had been a recent employee of Aludyne/Chassix in Benton Harbor, MI where he was a forklift driver. His former employers were the Elkhart Foundry and Machine Co. and Hayes-Lemmerz Inc. In his life Donald enjoyed collecting old cars, hunting, watching westerns, war movies and documentaries. He loved to travel and his home was always filled with music. He was an avid storyteller and Hill family historian. Above all, his greatest joy in life was spending time, talking, laughing and watching sports with family and friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, July 6, 2021 from 4 to 7pm at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 West Franklin Street, Elkhart, IN 46516. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 11am with an hour of visitation prior to the service at Agape Missionary Baptist Church, 248 W. Wolf Ave. Elkhart, IN 46516. The Rev. Dannell Brown of Agape Church will officiate.
