Dwayne Redmond was born on August 30, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois. His identical twin brother, Dwight, preceded him in death May of 2001. Sadly, his sister Pauletta Redmond Reid passed in May of 2018. His mother Josephine Redmond died when they were only one. His grandmother Letha Lee Withers raised all three of her grandchildren. She also preceded him in death in 2000.
Dwayne married the former Cecile Bell on August 29, 1987 in Chicago.
Dwayne was affectionately known to family and friends as Butch and they called his twin brother Dwight Pee Wee
Dwayne was baptized Catholic and graduated from St. Michael’s High School (Chicago) in 1978. He attended Wright Junior College and obtained his associates degree in journalism in 1981.
His first calling was baseball; he made it to double A for the St. Louis Cardinals. Fate was unkind as he was injured in the early 1980’s. An avid Cubs fan, he enjoyed going to games and watching them on television. Needless to say, Dwayne was thrilled when they won the World Series in 2016. He played basketball in high school and played on intermural teams throughout the Chicago district.
Dwayne developed his culinary skills from his grandmother (Ms. Withers). He used those skills to make a living here in Elkhart. Friends and family enjoyed his talent.
Dwayne is survived by his loving wife Cecile E. Redmond. Also surviving are his father, Clarence Johnson of Chicago; sister Erika McClay (Anton) of Chicago and their children Brittany and Elyssa. Nephew Brian Reid (Robin) of Seattle, WA, their children Evan and Sydney; Niece Lia Reid (Elijah) and her children Tevin and Jade of Chicago, loving cousins: Carmen Mitchell, Kim Redmond, and Michael Redmond, and life-long friends Bryant Sullivan, Lorenzo Smith, Tony Bravo, Stacey Mahoney, Michael Booth, Terrell Suggs, Terry Smith, George Bradley, and Matthew Washington.
Dwayne also loved his wife’s friends especially her sands of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority from Ball State University.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 10 AM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM with Rev. Matthew Coonan officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Street Cemetery.
In conclusion; he was personable and never knew a stranger.
Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers. Amen.
