Fred E. Saal, 83, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
He was born June 24, 1938 in Goshen to the late Arlo J. and Helen (Conrad) Saal.
On April 7, 1962, Fred married Carol Jean Anderson in Elkhart. Carol passed July 31, 2011. Surviving are two sons: Gregory B. (Jennifer) Saal of Arvada, CO and Christopher J. (Stacey Pletcher) of Granger and four grandchildren: Tyler (Brooke) Saal, Lindsey (Andy Alvarado) Saal, Elizabeth Saal and Ryan Saal.
Fred retired from Rupel Engineered Products where he was employed in sales. Prior to that, he served as the president of General Crane, a family business, which was started by his father-in-law, Charles Anderson. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he attained the rank of SP-4 and a graduate of the Ball State Teacher’s College (now Ball State University). An avid golfer, Fred was also an accomplished artist, specializing in painting and drawing. He was also a skilled handyman. First and foremost, in his life was his love for his two sons and his grandchildren.
Visitation for Fred will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 11 am until the hour of the memorial service at 12 noon at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. The Rev. Keith McFarren will officiate and burial will take place at a later date at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Elkhart.
