Gary V. Sutherland

Gary V. Sutherland, 82, of Elkhart, died on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born March 24, 1928 in Elkhart to the late Frank and Dorothy (Van Pelt) Swartzell.  Also preceding him in death is a daughter, Sara Smith and one grandson.

On February 29, 1988 Gary married Linda L. Canen in Elkhart.  She survives along with their children; Sondra Deferbrache, Nanette Frazeur, Bryan Canen, Lisa Rice; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, an aunt, Lois Torok, a brother, Joe (Barb) Sutherland and his four-legged companion, Nibbles.

Gary retired from the Gunite Corporation after 18 years of employment.  He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp and enjoyed gardening, specializing in growing blue berries and asparagus.  He also enjoyed feeding the wildlife in his yard, especially the squirrels.

At Gary’s request, there will be no services at this time.  His body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.  Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
