Gene “Pete” S. Shaw, 75, of Elkhart, passed away on September 20, 2023. He was born November 6, 1947 in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Eugene and Dorothy (Hayes) Shaw.
Pete married Virginia “Ginny” on December 12, 1981 on Heaton Lake. She survives along with their two special sons, Lee E. Shaw and Ryan S. Shaw both of Elkhart. Pete is also survived by his sisters, Penny (Tony) Pigors, Melinda “Mindy” Shaw and Sally (Chuck) Krumwiede as well as nine nieces and nephews. Pete will also be missed by his good dog Chewbacca “Chewie” who was always by Pete’s side.
Pete retired from I.B.M. after 21 years where he had received many awards and trips for his outstanding service and professionalism. He then worked for Berkey Mortgage, Palmer Ace Hardware and then Lowes in Goshen for about 6 years.
Pete served on ADEC Board for many years and served as Master of Ceremonies for Mosaic who provides care for people with special needs. He volunteered with the Elkhart County Special Olympics in basketball, track and field. He also volunteered in the 1987 International Special Olympics and was on the committee to get handicap accessible ramps put in downtown Elkhart. Pete was an advocate for people with special needs.
Pete graduated from Elkhart High School in 1965. He was on the class reunion committee for many years. He was also manager of the football team during their 1963 State Football Championship. Pete was a prior member of Bent Oak Golf Club for many years.
A visitation for Pete will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 from 3-5PM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A private family service will follow the visitation.
