Gladys McKenzie Obituary

Gladys M. McKenzie, 100, peacefully went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, January 17, 2022 surrounded by her loving family at Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born March 4, 1921 in New Columbia, IL to the late Fred and Mattie (McCarver) Rose.  She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Kenneth Rose and five sisters: Ethel Myrick, Edith Hart, Marguerite Kistler and Geneva and Alberta Bost.

In December of 1937, Gladys married Marvin Wood in Illinois.  Marvin died in 1978.  She then married Maynard McKenzie in March of 1981 in Elkhart.  Maynard died on April 18, 2008.  She is survived by two daughters: Carol Moyer and Judi Zilm, both of Elkhart and a son, Clinton (Debbie) Wood, also of Elkhart.  Also surviving are six grandchildren: Robbin (Dennis) Brown, Kim (Tony) Bass, Maria Zilm, Todd Zilm, Ben (Cassy) Wood and Lindsey (Shaun) Jacquez, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Gladys retired in 1981 from St. Joseph Valley Bank (now Chase Bank) where she was employed as a bookkeeper.  She was also a longtime member of the Northside Church of the Nazarene and loved nothing more than to be outside working in her flower gardens.  Gladys also belonged to several local gardening clubs and loved her family more than anything else.

Private family services will be held and Gladys will be laid to rest next to her husband Marvin at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart.  Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of the third floor PCU at Elkhart General Hospital for the loving care shown to Gladys while she battled Covid.
