Helen Louise (Peterson) Fields

Helen L. Fields, 97, of Elkhart died Monday August 8, 2022 at Elkhart General Hospital. Helen was born June 23, 1925 in South Bend to the late Agon and Albertina (Zimmerman) Peterson. She married Richard C. Fields on June 10, 1945 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in South Bend.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband Richard and her 2 siblings, Carolyn Deady and Charles Ekstrand.           

She is survived by her children: Rev. Thomas (Jane) Fields of Denver, CO and Kathleen (Rev. Michael) Schulz of Janesville, WI. Grandchildren: Rev. Andrew (Heidi) Fields, Sarah (Brian) Hasler, Joshus (Robin) Fields, Christopher (Diana) Fields, Jonathan (Ingrid) Schulz, Elizabeth (Joseph) Davies. As well as her great-grandchildren: Mark Fields, Joanna Fields, Elizabeth Fields, Timothy Fields, Thomas Hasler, Joseph Hasler, Zachary Fields, Maren Davies, Emma Schulz, Andrew Schulz, Owen Fields, Emma Fields, Elijah Fields, Eleanor Fields and Olivia Fields.

Helen graduated from John Adams High School in 1943. After graduating high school Helen worked for the Studebaker Company in the accounting department. She also worked in the Concord Township Assessors office as well as the Mayor of Elkhart’s office as a secretary. She then began working for the Elkhart County Municipal Government as clerk were she later retired. Helen spent many hours volunteering at Elkhart General Hospital. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkhart for most of her life where she was part of the choir, Ladies Aid and Sunday School teacher as well as a braille worker for the church. Helen also loved to bake for her family whom she loved very much.

A visitation for Helen will be held Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home in Elkhart from 3 pm to 5 pm. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 15, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkhart at 11 am with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart. Pastor Spencer Mielke will be officiating.
