James E. Cormican

James E. Cormican, 75, of Elkhart, IN passed away the afternoon of Monday, November 10, 2025.

James was born on January 22, 1950 in Elkhart, IN to the late Dr. Herbert L. and Phyllis M. (Borger) Cormican.

On August 12, 1972, James was united in marriage to Margaret (Batten) Cormican.

James was preceded in death by his parents as well as one sister, Lynne (Larry) Miles.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, as well as his daughters, Laura (Ryan) Moore and Ann (Josh) Cuthbert; three grandchildren, Sebastian Moore, Ben Cuthbert, and Lucy Cuthbert; sisters Susan Mann and Mary Ann (Dr. Jeffrey) Cain; and one brother, David (Betsy) Cormican.

James was a graduate of Elkhart High School (class of 1968) attended Indiana University where he earned his B.S. In his professional life he acted as the Director of the Humane Society, worked with his brother David at his restaurant Casey’s, and eventually retired from Martin’s Supermarket after 25 years. Jim was happiest on the golf course and in the water. He was a fantastic water skier and loved teaching anyone who showed interest how to ski. In the last few years when he was no longer able to ski, he enjoyed taking his dogs to the lake to swim and float around. He was an avid reader, life-long Bears and IU fan, and enjoyed building doll houses and RC boats and planes. He had an innate love for animals, especially dogs. He had a big heart and would quietly help anyone in need. For the last few years, he enjoyed volunteering with Susanna’s Kitchen of Elkhart two days a week. 

James was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015 and remained cancer free until 2020, when it returned. He began a long-term treatment therapy but had began not to feel well in recent months. He decided to discontinue treatment in October and begin care with in-home hospice. He passed peacefully after one night at the Center for Hospice Care. 

James was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial visitation for James will take place Friday, November 28, 2025 from 4PM to 6PM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 West Franklin St, Elkhart, IN 46516.
