James A. “Jim” Wininger, 88, of Elkhart, died at home on Monday, August 12, 2024.
Jim was born March 14, 1936, in Montgomery, IN to the late Clement and Daisy (Wratten) Wininger. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Melvin and Betty Nusbaum.
On June 20, 1964, Jim married the former Donna J. Stauffer in Elkhart. She survives along with four sons: Jim (Stephanie) Artley, Rick (Sharon) Wininger, Allen (Denise) Wininger and Terry (Kim) Wininger. Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Jamie and Jeff Artley, Crystal (Justin) Wade, Danyel Wininger, Aleece Wininger (Luis Osorio), Aurora, Mackenzie and Trevor James Wininger, Stephanie (Todd) Tagliaferro and Mike Vidmar and fourteen great grandchildren; Ella, Madilyn and Ethan Artley, Mikah Wininger, Jade, Kena and Jalen Wade and Dallas and Levi McCreary, Penelope and River James Wininger, Andrew and Abby Tagliaferro and Niley Vidmar.
Jim worked for the Selmer Company as a clarinet builder for twenty-five years before taking a position with J.J. Babbitt where he made mouth pieces. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, was an avid bowler, bowling in leagues with his sons and enjoyed the family fishing vacations to Sidnaw, MI in the upper peninsula of Michigan.
Visitation for Jim will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 5-7 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. There will be no services. Cremation has taken place and burial with military honors will be at a later date in the veteran section of Prairie Street Cemetery.
