Joe W Thompson

Joe W. Thompson, 93, of Cassopolis, MI died on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Wedgewood Pines Assisted Living in South Bend.

Joe was born on July 17, 1927 in Tiptonville, TN to the late Teolia and Manie (Westbrook) Thompson, and raised in Charleston, MO before his family came to Indiana in 1944.

On May 6, 1950 in Elkhart he married Vivian Owens.  Vivian died August 7, 1989.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters; Lovie Anderson and Ruby Walters and three brothers; Robert, James and Russell Thompson.

Surviving is a daughter, Julie Thompson of Mishawaka; two sons, Randy (Gyla) Thompson of Bristol and Mark (Shirley) Thompson of Elkhart; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two brothers; Theodore Thompson of Milwaukee, WI and Emmett Thompson of Mississippi.

Joe was employed by Whitehall Labs for 44 years prior to his retirement. As a young man, he accepted Christ as his Savior. He was a member of Canaan Baptist Church for several years. He also attended Northside Baptist Church, and more recently attended St. James AME with family.

He enjoyed all sports, making an occasional trip to a Chicago Cubs game. He loved all music, especially the tenor saxophone. His family will remember him for the strong work ethic he exemplified.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, a private visitation will be held from 3:00pm until the hour of the service at 4:00 pm on Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.  The Rev. Tom Miley will officiate services. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.
