GOSHEN - John E. Lehman, 102, of 1225 Greencroft Drive, Apt. 203, died Monday, January 12, at Greencroft Healthcare. He was born December 17, 1912 in North Lima, Ohio to Edwin C. and Mary (Basinger) Lehman. On June 10, 1944 he married Margaret Swope in Columbiana, Ohio. She survives along with four children: Thomas Lehman (Mary), South Bend; Mary Ann Wieand (Jon), Goshen; Becky Gascho (Luke), Goshen; David Lehman (Bonnie), Mechanicsville, Virginia; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 6 sisters: Elva Yoder, Grace Hubert, Wilma Blosser, Hazel Schmucker, Flossie Yoder, and Esther Miller. John was a 1939 graduate of Goshen College, where he received a degree in education. He was a teacher and school principal for seven years in Mahoning County, Ohio. He served in Civilian Public Service in Pennsylvania and Nebraska, from 1943-46. He then accepted assignments as the director of the Mennonite Church's service program in Ethiopia, from 1948-50, and of the Mennonite service program in Puerto Rico, from 1952-56. He was a member of the Goshen College administration for three years. He also served as principal of Betania Mennonite School in Puerto Rico, from 1959-61. On returning to the States, he was director of the Mennonite Voluntary Service program for 17 years, until his retirement in 1978. He was an active member of Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart, serving as a Sunday school teacher for children and adults, assisting with Summer Bible School, and serving on many church-related boards and committees. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 17, at the Greencroft Meetinghouse, 1904 S 15th St, Goshen IN 46526, where a memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with Nelson Kraybill officiating.
