Joyce E. Newsome

Joyce E. Newsome, 97, of Elkhart, Indiana passed away the morning of Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Elkhart General Hospital

Joyce was born on January 27, 1928 in Hickman, Kentucky to the late Roosevelt Sledge and Lizzie Thomas. On February 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to her loving husband, Clarence Newsome. They spent 30 wonderful years together until his passing in 1978.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as two brothers, Roosevelt Sledge, Jr. and Otha Sledge, and sister Maxine Elam.

She is survived by her niece Barbara Harwell, as well as other nieces and nephews.

Joyce worked at CTS as a laborer for 29 years, and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Salvation Army. Above all, Joyce was a very involved member of Agape Missionary Baptist Church. She was known affectionately as “Mother Newsome” by her church family and could recite any scripture. Joyce was very strong in her faith and was loved by all her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A funeral service for Joyce will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at Agape Missionary Baptist Church, 248 West Wolf Avenue, Elkhart, Indiana 46516, with visitation for one hour prior. Pastor Dannell Brown will officiate.
