Leroy Robinson Jr., 85, of Elkhart, died on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Methodist Hospital in Merrillville.
Leroy was born January 17, 1937 in Laurel, MS to the late Leroy and Lillian (Knight) Robinson. He was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Lindsey; three sisters, Dell George, Lula Mae Kent and Mary Alice Barnett; one brother, Louis Robinson and a stepson, Wesley Hopkins.
On June 22, 1963 he married Beatrice F. Bard in Elkhart. Beatrice died May 11, 2006. He later married Euba Alice Wilcox in Elkhart and she survives.
In addition to his wife, Leroy is survived by three daughters: Stephanie Robinson and Elkhart, Keborah (Leonard) Glenn, both of Elkhart and Deborah (Lawrence) Robinson-Dale of Indianapolis; two sons: Abdul (Tara) Robinson of South Bend and Charles Lindsey of Laurel, MS; twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Leroy is also survived by four stepdaughters: Vanessa (Thomas) Cooper, Donita (Dewitt) Hammond, Chinal (Reginald) Holmes and Latreese Hopkins, all of Cleveland, OH; ten step grandchildren and twenty step great grandchildren.
Leroy was employed by the city of Elkhart as the building commissioner for 16 years until his retirement. He was a member of the St. James A.M.E. Church and along with his wife Beatrice, founded H.O.M.E., an organization whose purpose was to assist individuals in purchasing homes. He also helped to found the Elkhart Chapter of the Black Expo, which he remained very active in. He was also a member of the N.A.A.C.P. and was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
Visitation for Leroy will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022 beginning at 11:30 am at St. James A.M.E. Church with services starting at 12:30 pm. The Rev. Charles Cross of St. James A.M.E. will officiate. Burial with military honors will take place at Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
