Mary Ellen Shamory, 92, of Elkhart died May 14, 2020 at her residence. Born October 2, 1927 in Elkhart to Kessler and Cecilia (Power) Shamory. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Summers and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Summer.
Ms. Shamory was born in raised in Elkhart, graduating from Elkhart High School in 1945. She moved to the Chicago area in 1953 where she attended Chicago Conservatory of Music and was a member of the North Shore Chorale Society in Evanston. A secretary in the Learning Disabilities Center at Northwestern University. She was a member of the NU Staff Advisory Council. He returned to Elkhart upon her retirement from Northwestern in 1992.
As a member of the board of the Elkhart County Symphony Association, she was active in the Auxiliary and Chorus. Mary was, also, on the Board of the Elkhart County American Cancer Society, a docent at the Midwest Museum of American Art, a member of the Elkhart General Hospital Auxiliary, The Four Arts Club, a volunteer at the Ruthmere Mansion, and a member of Old Orchard Ladies League. She was a soprano with the Goshen Community Chorale and the Elkhart Community Chorus. She published “Aunt Kate’s Christmas” in 2004 and was a member of Wellspring Writers. A member of Premier Arts, she appeared in the ensemble of several productions.
Visitation will be held at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 19 from 4:30-6PM. Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle on Wednesday, May 20 at 10:30 AM with an hour of visitation prior.
