Mary Evelyn (Herr) Weaver, 97, of Elkhart, passed away June 18, 2023 at Hubbard Hill Estates after a long life well-lived. She was born in Hanover, PA, on March 10, 1926, to Elmer and Fannie (Miller) Herr, the youngest of 7 children.
Mary wed Harold L. Weaver of Elkhart in 1950. They were married for 69 years. She is survived by their three children: Barry (Marge) Weaver of Bloomington, IL; Karen (Galen) Hershberger of Goshen; and Kent (Jodi) Weaver of Pleasant Hill, OH; as well as 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Her husband, parents and 6 siblings preceded her in death.
She graduated from Goshen College in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught for 38 years in the Elkhart Community Schools, devoting most of her career to teaching kindergarten at Monger Elementary School. She was a master teacher and was much loved by colleagues and students alike. Mary retired in 1990.
Mary was a longtime member of Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart. She was a dear and faithful friend to many, growing relationships through one-on-one visits over many years. She had a beautiful soprano voice and loved singing in choirs and as part of the congregation.
Mary and Harold moved to Hubbard Hill Estates Retirement Community, south of Elkhart, in 1998. They greatly enjoyed the community there. Mary resided at Hubbard Hill for the rest of her life.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 23, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A memorial service will take place at Prairie Street Mennonite Church on Monday, July 24, at 11:00 a.m. A private family burial will take place at Prairie Street Cemetery prior to the service. Memorial gifts may be made to Prairie Street Mennonite Church or Goshen College.
