Patricia Johnson Whitney, 77, Elkhart High School class of 1958, died on December 30, 2017 at Morningside Assisted Living in Williamsburg, VA. She was born on July 25, 1940 in Elkhart, the daughter of Lloyd and Susan Johnson.
Pat earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry in 1962 from Northwestern University. In 1966 she received a master’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles while working at Hughes Aircraft Company.
In 1961, Pat married Thomas A. Whitney of Toledo, OH. After graduate school, the couple moved to New Jersey, where Pat raised their three children. Following a move to Medfield, MA, she became active in community service and assisted the elderly and others as a volunteer tax preparer though several community programs. After the death of her husband in 1994, Pat returned to Elkhart where she helped to care for her parents and elder brother, Tom.
Pat was an avid reader and supporter of her local libraries throughout her life.
Pat is survived by her younger brother, Charles Johnson of Williamsburg, VA; her three children: Carol Whitney of Silver Spring, MD, Glen Whitney of Venice, CA and Wayne Whitney of Berkeley, CA and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Tom.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 28th beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be held immediately following visitation at 11:00 A.M. Family friend, Liz Stout will officiate. Private family burial will be held at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
