Pauline “Polly” Shaefer, 78, of Elkhart died June 11, 2020 at her home surrounded by family after a brief illness. Polly was born December 16, 1941 in New Castle, PA to the late Robert and Gertrude (Wolf) Warner.
She married Robert R. Shaefer on January 9, 1965 in Vermilion, Ohio. Polly earned her B.S. in chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University. Polly loved to spend time with her family and pets. She enjoyed sailing, kayaking, swimming, SCUBA diving, gardening, and playing tennis. As an avid SCUBA diver, she logged hundreds of dives in every corner of the world. Polly was a skilled map maker and marine artist. She enjoyed helping others, volunteering at Susanna’s Kitchen and was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC in Elkhart.
Polly is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bob Shaefer, a son, David R. Shaefer of Elkhart; a daughter, Sandy (John) Anderson Galena, IL; and a grandson, Matthew Shaefer. Polly was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Warner.
A private family service will take place at First Congregational Church with a public memorial set for a later date. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
