Peggy Thomas Obituary

Peggy Louise Thomas, 70, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 9:45 AM.

Peggy was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Curry and Oneida Owens-Curry, husband, Harold Thomas and brother Kent and Alonzo Curry.

Peggy is survived by her two daughters: Tanisha (Rodney) Dale and Travonda (Ulysses) Cockerham, both of Elkhart.  She was a proud grandmother to Rodney (Seccoyah) Dale of Chicago, IL, Kambria Dale of Jacksonville, FL, Darius Curry of Elkhart and Dontice Curry of Indianapolis, IN.  Peggy was also blessed with eight great grandchildren.  Also surviving are her siblings: Herman Brent Curry and Kim (Darla) Curry, both of Elkhart, Angela Curry of Elkhart, Regina Curry of South Bend, Anita Curry of Indianapolis, Micah (Stacy) Curry of Indianapolis, Edward Curry (longtime partner, Marilyn Potter) of Elkhart and Tony Bonds of Elkhart.  Peggy’s best friend, Denise Dye of Elkhart, was a constant source of joy and companionship in her life.  Those two were like the movie Thelma and Louise, arguing one minute and laughing with each other a minute or two later.

Peggy was a woman of strong faith who found comfort and community at Agape Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an active and dedicated member.  Her presence at the church was a constant with cleaning, cooking, being there for events, and to the dismay of Pastor Brown, no matter how many times he told her not to be in the church along, Peggy being Peggy, would not listen.  Peggy also enjoyed attending the services of other churches as there was never an event going on that Peggy didn’t want to attend.  Looking forward to the services seemed to be as exciting as her actual attendance as she would rattle off her intentions to be there with a huge smile on her face.

Peggy attended many athletic events as she was a huge fan of sports and even more passionate about being there to support the children.  Miss Peggy, momma, auntie, grandma and/or friend, she never thought of anyone as a stranger at the games as she screamed at the officials.  Peggy would chat it up with whoever sat next to her, making them feel loved and before you knew it, they were referring to her as one of the listed titles.  Second to Peggy’s kind presence being missed, it will be her delicious cooking.
She had a way in the kitchen that will be hard to match and would literally make desserts for anyone in need.  The requests for her sweet potato pie cake would have made a millionaire if she charged, but that was not Peggy’s way.  Her helpful heart, energy, beautiful smile and willingness to help being gone will leave a huge void because her kindness touched so many lives.  Peggy actually got 90 years of living out of 70 years of existence.

A Celebration of Peggy’s life will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Agape Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Dannell Brown.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the service starting at noon.  Services are provided by Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Agape Missionary Baptist Church 248 Wolf Ave. Elkhart, IN 46516.
