Versie L Smith

Versie L. Smith, 85, of Elkhart, died on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Valley View Health Care Center in Elkhart.

Versie was born on October 17, 1936 in Sledge, MS to the late Q A Smith and Alma (Moten) Jeter.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ramona Smith, a son, Carl Smith, a sister, Dorothy Lee and a brother, Ire Jeter.  Her stepfather and the man that raised her, Ire Jeter, also preceded her in death.

On September 8, 1956, Versie married Eddie J. Smith.  Eddie died on March 25, 2014.  Surviving are two daughters: Eddie J. Smith and Diana Cato, both of Houston, TX; three sons: Jimmie C. (Fannie) Smith of Memphis, TN, Monroe Smith and Nicky Smith, both of Elkhart; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Brown of CA, Claudia Smith of Chicago, IL, P.T. Smith, Chicago, IL and two brothers: Fred (Bertha) Jeter of South Bend, IN and Willie (Cathy) Jeter of Chicago, IL.

Versie was employed by Bashor Homes as a cook for 36 years until her retirement.  She then went to work for Americana Nursing Home (now Woodland Manor) in Elkhart for 26 years before retiring again.  Never one to sit idle, she went back to Americana Nursing Home for another ten years before finally retiring.

Visitation for Versie will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022 from 11:00 am until the hour of the service at 12:00 noon at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.  The Rev. William Hackworth will officiate and burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart.
