Vincent DeVito, 97, of South Bend, died at home on Thursday, May 25, 2023.
Vince was born on May 13, 1926, in Elkhart to the late Michael and Sanita (Lembo) DeVito. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Anthony DeVito and a sister, Josephine Douthitt.
Vince worked for 27 years with financial services supplier, Associates Corporation, once based in South Bend. He began his career with them as a combination service manager/purchasing agent. In 1976, he moved into a similar position with Coachmen Industries based in Middlebury. Vince retired in 1991.
Vince was a graduate of Elkhart High School and also a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. While in school, he also served as an altar boy. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans and the Associates Men’s Club where he served as the manager for the softball team. While manager, the team won the city championship of the league. Vince also enjoyed playing cards, bowling and golfing, winning trophies in both sports. He even made a hole-in-one! Vince was known as the “Master of Tinkering”. If it’s broken, give it to Vince. If he can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed!
Surviving Vince is a sister, Lucy Wilson of South Bend, with whom Vince shared a home with for 32 years; three nieces: Nanci and Gary Klaybor of LaPorte, Laura and Harry Seider of Granger and Luanne and Gary Kulczar of Houston; three nephews: Michael Douthitt of Mishawaka, Michael and Heidi DeVito of Clifton, VA and John and Sonia Collmer of Edwardsburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church where visitation will be held beginning at 12:30. Father Ben Landrigan will officiate, and burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
