Walter H. Luebke Jr., 92, of Elkhart, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Brentwood Assisted Living in Elkhart.
He was born May 23, 1932, in Oshkosh, WI to the late Walter H. and Kathryn E. (McDonald) Luebke Sr. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith, a sister, Nancy Thomas and his son-in- law, Lon McFarland.
Walter married the love of his life, Edith C. Doyle, on December 29, 1951, in Elkhart. Together, they shared 69 years of marriage. Surviving are three daughters: Vicky McFarland of Niles, Michelle (Jeff) Kline and Sherry (Mark) Dixon, both of Elkhart, a son, Greg (Gen) Luebke of Rhinelander, WI; eleven grandchildren: Melanie (Jason), Valerie (Brad), Kaitlyn (David), Matthew, Sean, Nathan, Bryce (Becky), Taylor, Lillian, Breyden and Chris and seven great grandchildren: Parker, Ainsley, Liam, Hadley, Kaiden, Deklan and Waylon. Also surviving is a sister, Pat Gordy of Osceola.
Walter’s first job after the army was with CTS. He then worked for many years as a mold maker for Michiana Plastics in Mishawaka before his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cassopolis where he served for many years as an usher. He was also a veteran of the Cleveland Township Fire Department for over 20 years, having served in many capacities, including Fire Chief as well as an Emergency Medical Technician. He was a lifetime member of the Elkhart Conservation Club as well as a member of the Austin Healy Car Club and he had a deep passion for fishing, especially ice fishing. On his 90th birthday, Walter decided he wanted to parachute, so he did! He was also honored as a passenger on the Honor Flight, honoring veterans for their service with a flight to Washington, D.C.
Visitation for Walter will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, from 10:00 am until the hour of the service at 12:00 pm at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. The Reverend Paul Doellinger of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cassopolis will officiate. Walter will be laid to rest next to his wife Edith at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where military honors will be rendered.
